A shared program of Cumberland (DHA 5), Colchester East Hants (DHA 4), and Pictou County (DHA 6) district health authorities.  Coping with Quitting is a six-week nicotine treatment, education and support group for people who want to quit smoking. This program provides support to help the individual stay motivated to stop or reduce their smoking. The Smokers' Helpline encourages calls from smokers who want to quit smoking, are thinking of quitting, have stopped smoking and need support, and for those who don't want to quit. This program is also available to individuals who want information on how to help others quit smoking.

Our quit specialists are available to take your call Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During other times or when our specialists are busy, just leave a message and we'll get back to you quickly.   Smokers' Helpline is a free, confidential, telephone-based service.

Health care professionals can refer their patients directly to the Smokers’ Helpline with the Fax Referral Program. With the patient’s consent, the fax referral process enables Smokers’ Helpline Quit Coaches to directly contact the patient. The Nova Scotia Fax Referral Form is available at www.cancer.ca.

Within 3 business days of receiving the referral the Quit Coaches will contact the client for the first time. Health Professionals and clients can fill out the form together indicating the clients name, contact information, language preference, signature, best time to call and whether the Quit Coaches can leave a message.

Smokers' Helpline Online offers an online discussion forum to post questions and experiences, a "Quit Meter" that gives personalized feedback about financial and health gains based on your stop date, "Quit Buddies" (an instant messanger service where you can send messages to others for support at any time), inspirational e-mails with helpful information, tips and tools for remaining smoke-free, and access to self-help materials and a list of community-based services.
